Chapter 10 - Sebastian

Sebastian felt weightless as Nadia flew him across the mountain in search of shelter. He hated how he leaned against her, helplessly in her mercy, but he didn’t have much of a choice. He looked around the snowy terrain, and it hit him that Nadia was taking him to the same cave where he had taken her the night he had found her alone in a blizzard.

Sebastian had worked hard to suppress his memories of the mountain throughout the whole expedition. However, as they approached the mouth of the cave he could feel the emotions rushing in. He had learned to ignore the memories of that place because the sweetness was tinged with pain and loss.

What are the odds that she brings me back to the same cave? Sebastian found it humorously ironic, and he would have cracked a smile in a different situation. Unfortunately, the story was more annoying than lovely, and the thought of it fouled his mood. It would have been nothing short of a beautiful story if things had not gone the way they had gone between them.

Sadly, there was so much bad blood between Nadia and Sebastian now. The time they had spent together in his cabin had been more taxing than he had been willing to admit.

Being with Nadia in his small cabin with little room to avoid each other, having Nadia in his space, her powerful scent filling Sebastian at every turn, watching how she interacted with their children, and interacting with the children himself—all of those things had come together to make it extremely difficult for Sebastian to withstand the constant urge he felt to sweep Nadia off of her feet and into his arms. He felt a glowing pride in himself for holding on as well as he did, making sure that things did not escalate between them as they had on previous occasions.

As Nadia set Sebastian down inside the cave and went about building a fire, he watched her curiously, impressed with how efficiently she moved and worked. He thought back to the battle they had just fought and felt nothing but respect for Nadia as she had displayed excellent leadership and efficiency in the face of danger.

When the mid-tier had appeared, Sebastian had felt grateful to Nadia for her attention to safety. It was dangerous enough to move their children, as demons could always sense the presence of children who had a mix of both wolf and dragon blood. Sebastian could only imagine what a catastrophe it would have been had the children been present with them when the mid-tier arrived. In that moment, he had been thankful for her foresight in ensuring the children were out of harm’s way before any demon encounters.

During the battle, Nadia’s strength and abilities had also impressed Sebastian. He loved how resourceful she was, and considered her a natural-born leader. She had been quick to order her troops into an organized retreat at the arrival of the mid-tier. What was even more impressive to Sebastian was that she had been alert enough to make the call before he did.
